Overview

University of Pretoria (UP) founded in 1908 is a public university in Pretoria, Gauteng.

The University of Pretoria (UP) was established in 1908 with just four professors and 32 students, in a little house called Kya Rosa. Today, it is one of the largest research universities in South Africa. UP has transformed into a dynamic university community of staff and students who come from a range of diverse backgrounds and cultures showcasing South African and global societies. The University was born from a vision to create a space for quality education and for new ideas to flourish. Over the course of its existence, and through different phases of political power and social change, UP has been resilient in its commitment to academic quality.

Entry Requirements

You have to meet the below entry requirements in order to study at University of Pretoria (UP).

To be able to register, candidates must comply with the minimum requirements for degree studies, as well as with the minimum requirements for the relevant programme. The calculation of an Admission Point Score (APS) is based on a candidate’s achievement in any SIX recognised NSC 20-credit subjects by using the NSC seven-point rating scale. Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject and may not be used for calculating the APS. Life Orientation is also not a faculty-specific subject requirement.

The University of Pretoria (UP) Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation, fondly referred to as the TuksRes Family, is a stand-alone business unit, with various management teams serving residence students.

With 10 000 students in our accommodation spaces, the University of Pretoria is proud to be known as the largest residential university in South Africa. 

Prospective undergraduate and postgraduate applicants may apply for accommodation together with their study application online. It is not necessary to complete an additional form.

Applications for the University of Pretoria open on 01 March each year. A preferred residence of choice may be indicated on the application, but placement cannot be guaranteed.

Online Registration

In line with COVID-19 regulations, UP student registrations for the 2021 academic year are fully online. Online registration opens on 4 January 2021 for current and postgraduate students. New 2021 first year students will be able to register online from 1 March 2021 after they have been fully admitted.The dedicated UP Registration Call Centre through telephone and email assistance will be available from 5 January 2021 until 12 March 2021.
