Valterra Platinum Engineering Learnership Programme 2026
Valterra Platinum, formerly Anglo American Platinum, is inviting applications for its Engineering Learnership Programme (18.2 – Unemployed).
The programme provides unemployed candidates with an opportunity to develop technical knowledge and practical workplace skills within the mining and platinum group metals industry.
A total of 16 learnership opportunities are listed across the Rustenburg Process operations.
Available Engineering Learnerships
The following opportunities are available:
- Fitter – 5 positions
- Boilermaker – 4 positions
- Rigger – 1 position
- Electrician – 4 positions
- Instrument Mechanician – 1 position
- Millwright – 1 position
Learnerships Available at PMR
The following positions are allocated to PMR:
- Fitter – 1 position;
- Boilermaker – 1 position;
- Electrician – 1 position; and
- Instrument Mechanician – 1 position.
Learnerships Available at BMR
The following opportunities are allocated to BMR:
- Fitter – 2 positions;
- Boilermaker – 1 position;
- Electrician – 1 position; and
- Millwright – 1 position.

The Convertor Plant has the following opportunities:
- Fitter – 1 position;
- Boilermaker – 1 position; and
- Electrician – 1 position.

Waterval Smelters has the following positions:
- Fitter – 1 position;
- Boilermaker – 1 position;
- Rigger – 1 position; and
- Electrician – 1 position.
What Does the Learnership Programme Offer?
Successful candidates will participate in structured technical training consisting of:
- Off-the-job training; and
- Workplace training.
Successful completion of the learnership programme will result in a nationally recognised Artisan qualification.
This makes the programme particularly relevant to candidates who want to pursue skilled artisan careers within engineering, mining, processing, smelting and related industrial environments.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants can qualify through Matric, N2 or an appropriate NCV Level 4 qualification, subject to the requirements specified by Valterra Platinum.
Matric or Technical Matric
Applicants must have Matric or Technical Matric with:
- Mathematics – minimum 40%;
- Physical Science – minimum 40%; and
- English – minimum 40%.
Mathematical Literacy is not accepted in place of Mathematics.
N2 or Higher
Applicants with N2 or higher must have the subjects required for their chosen trade.
The specific requirements differ according to the learnership.
Boilermaker Requirements
Applicants interested in the Boilermaker Learnership require the applicable N2 subjects:
- Plating & Structural Steelwork or Welders Theory;
- Plating Structural & Steelwork Drawings;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
Millwright Requirements
Applicants for the Millwright Learnership require the applicable subjects including:
- Electrical Trade Theory, Electrotechnology or Electrotechnics;
- Fitting Trade Theory or Mechanotechnology;
- Industrial Electronics or Engineering Drawings;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
Electrician Requirements
Electrician Learnership applicants require:
- Electrical Trade Theory, Electrotechnology or Electrotechnics;
- Industrial Electronics or Engineering Drawings;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
Mechanical Fitter Requirements
Candidates applying for the Fitter opportunity require:
- Fitting Trade Theory, Mechanotechnology or Mechanotechnics;
- Engineering Drawings or Draughting;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
Instrument Mechanician Requirements
Applicants interested in becoming an Instrument Mechanician require:
- Instrument Trade Theory or Industrial Instrument;
- Industrial Electronics;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
Rigger Requirements
Applicants for the Rigger Learnership require:
- Rigging Trade Theory;
- Engineering Drawings or Draughting;
- Mathematics; and
- Engineering Science.
NCV Level 4 Applicants
Candidates can also qualify with an appropriate NCV Level 4 qualification in the relevant trade.
All applicable subjects must have been passed with a minimum of 40%.
Applicants should compare their exact subjects with the requirements of the trade for which they intend to apply.
Documents Required
Applications must include all the documents required by Valterra Platinum.
Applicants must upload:
- An updated CV;
- Certified copies of all relevant qualifications; and
- A copy of their South African ID.
Candidates from host communities must additionally provide:
- Proof of residence stamped by the relevant tribal office or municipality.
Valterra Platinum states that first preference will be given to relevant applications from host communities.
The required documents may be combined and uploaded as one document.
Important Information Before Applying
Applicants should make sure that they select a trade that matches their qualifications and technical subjects.
For example, having an N2 qualification alone does not necessarily mean that an applicant meets the requirements for every trade. The required trade theory and supporting technical subjects differ between Electrician, Fitter, Boilermaker, Millwright, Instrument Mechanician and Rigger opportunities.
