Role Overview: Teaching Assistant (Independent Contractor)

As an independent contractor, you will play an essential role in facilitating the online learning experience of students. Below are the key aspects of the role:
What You Need to Know:
- Independent Status: Teaching Assistants (TAs) will not be considered UNISA employees and, therefore, will not be eligible for benefits such as medical aid, office space, equipment, or leave (including sick leave).
- Infrastructure Requirement: You must have your own computer, internet connection, and any additional necessary office equipment.
- Remote Nature: This is a fully remote position. You will not be required to be based at any UNISA campus.
- Time Commitment: A minimum of 20 hours per week is required, distributed over most days to ensure ongoing engagement and student support.
Key Duties of a Teaching Assistant
If appointed, your responsibilities will include:
- Course Familiarization: Engage with the online subject content to ensure a thorough understanding.
- Feedback and Reviews: Evaluate and provide feedback on online study materials and assessments.
- Training Participation: Attend and complete UNISA’s online training sessions to understand the pedagogical approach and the myModules platform.
- Support Site Engagement: Actively contribute to the TA support site and assist colleagues as needed.
- Mentorship: Mentor new TAs to help them meet performance expectations.
- Content Contribution: Develop ideas and draft assessment questions when requested.
- Student Support: Guide, facilitate, and support the learning journey of approximately 250 students.
- Discussion Facilitation: Lead and monitor subject-specific online discussions.
- Marking and Feedback: Grade eight online assignments and a portfolio, providing detailed feedback.
- Meeting Participation: Attend online marking guideline meetings via Microsoft Teams.
- Administrative Tasks: Fulfill administrative duties such as completing spreadsheets and generating reports.
Requirements to Apply

- Residency: Reside in South Africa.
- Employment Status: Not be currently employed on a permanent or fixed-term contract with UNISA.
