The Trainee Yard Official will undergo a comprehensive training program aimed at equipping you with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively as a Yard Official. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to grow within Transnet Freight Rail and contribute to its operations.

What Will You Do?

As a Trainee Yard Official, you will be required to:

  • Complete Theoretical and Practical Training: You will attend and successfully complete both theoretical and practical training programs to qualify as a Yard Official.
  • Develop Competency: By the end of the training period, you will develop the necessary skills to perform various operations and operate assigned equipment.
  • Meet Safety and Operational Goals: You will work to accomplish assignments in line with company strategies, always focusing on efficiency and safety.
  • Maintain Training Records: Throughout your training, you will maintain a portfolio of evidence to track your progress and demonstrate your competency.
  • Work Independently: After successful completion of your training, you will be accountable for managing your own tasks as a fully qualified Yard Official.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Education: Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Psychological Screening: Must pass a psychological battery test.
  • Medical Fitness: Must pass the relevant medical tests (including eye and hearing tests).
  • Computer Literacy: A basic understanding of computer systems is essential.
  • Physical Fitness: The role requires a good level of physical fitness.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Yard Official Course: Knowledge of yard operations and siding layouts.
  • Shunting Procedures: Understanding of how trains are moved within a yard.
  • Train Service & Act 85: Knowledge of train services and railway regulations.
  • Radio Train Order System: Proficiency in using the radio system for communication.
  • Hazmat & Safety: Awareness of hazardous materials and high voltage safety.

Competencies:

  • Problem Solving & Negotiating: Ability to handle stressful situations and find solutions to problems.
  • Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is key when working with train operations.
  • Safety Orientation: A strong focus on safety procedures in every aspect of the job.
