Transnet Freight Rail is looking for motivated individuals to apply for the role of Trainee Train Assistant in Worcester, South Africa.

About the Role
As a Trainee Train Assistant, you’ll work closely with experienced Train Drivers to ensure the safe and efficient operation of trains. Your duties will include preparing locomotives, assisting with brake tests, shunting, and monitoring safety during travel. This hands-on training position is designed to prepare you for full-time certification as a Train Assistant.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and inspect locomotives and equipment before departure
- Assist with brake and roadworthiness tests
- Perform shunting duties and place/remove trucks per work orders
- Monitor safe running of the train enroute
- Assist during emergency incidents
- Maintain accurate logs and assist with administrative tasks
- Uphold safety and operational standards at all times
Requirements
- Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Must be at least 1.6 meters tall
- Physically fit with good hearing, vision, and coordination
- South African citizen
- Able to carry heavy equipment
- Willing to work shifts and under high-pressure environments
- Must be 21 years or older to undertake train driving/control duties
- Willing to undergo medical tests and safety assessments regularly
Training and Certification
Selected candidates will undergo theoretical and practical training to become certified Train Assistants. You must pass all assessments and meet the required competency standards to qualify.

- Route planning, observation, and safety awareness
- Excellent time management, reasoning, and judgement
- Strong physical and mental stamina
- Basic understanding of labor and safety legislation
