Stellenbosch University Graduate School of Economic and Management Science invites students to apply for Scholarship Programme 2024 / 2025 academic year.
Scholarship Application Closing Date: 15 August 2024
The scholarship will be awarded for PhD studies at the Stellenbosch University Graduate School of Economic and Management Sciences, for a three-year programme in any of Faculty’s Research Themes. Studies will begin on the 20 January 2025.
The scholarship will be awarded to the value of R200 000 per year for three years of study.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by no later than 18 October 2024 – if you do not receive any feedback by this date, please consider your application unsuccessful.
The final awarding of scholarships will be made at the discretion of the Graduate School governing board and is subject to the availability of funds and appointing of a suitable supervisor.
Reuirements
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You may be a South African citizen or foreign national (preference will be given to previously disadvantaged South African citizens)
- You must meet the minimum criteria for admission to a PhD programme at Stellenbosch University (you must have completed a master’s degree in the relevant discipline)
- You must intend on pursuing a full-time three-year doctoral qualification in the Faculty’s Research Themes
- You must be able to commence your studies at Stellenbosch University on 20 January 2025
- You must have achieved a minimum result of 70% in your master’s programme

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document, if a South African citizen (certified copy)
- Passport photo page, if an international student (certified copy)
- Academic records of ALL previous and current tertiary studies: Diploma/ degree certificates (certified copies) and official study records (transcripts)
- Motivational letter stating why you are suitable for this scholarship (maximum 1 page) (to be completed on the application form) (read our tips on how to write a motivational letter for your bursary application)
- Proof of competency in English (proof that you have obtained a qualification from tertiary institutions where English is the language of instruction, or proof of English Language proficiency) (not older than 24 months)
- Research concept note on a research topic which you intend to study during your doctoral studies (to be completed on the application form)
- 3 academic references that must testify your potential to complete a doctoral study programme (must be emailed by the referee, directly to GEM@sun.ac.za by 15 August 2024)
