Stellenbosch University invites students to apply for Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarship Programme 2024 academic year.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is offering the “Turning the Tide” Masters Scholarship for the 2024 academic year. Here are the details of the scholarship:
Themes: Scholarships will be awarded for Masters (full thesis) studies in all disciplines that are part of the Faculty, but research topics should fall under one of the following themes:
- African Cultural Studies
- Identity, Gender, and/or Queer Studies
- The Anthropocene and Ecocriticism
Coverage Value: The scholarship is valued at R170,000, payable over 18 months to two years. Scholars, along with their supervisors, may also apply for additional funding for the following:
- Writing retreat (R2,205)
- Local conference attendance (R8,269)
- Publication costs (R10,920)
Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the SU Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria:
- May be a South African citizen or an international student
- Must not be older than 30 years of age
- Should have achieved a first-class distinction (minimum 75%) in the final year of their Honours degree
- Must apply for entrance to study at Stellenbosch University
- Must intend to study towards a full-time Masters (full thesis) at the Graduate School of the Arts and Social Science Faculty at Stellenbosch University in 2024
- Must be able to start studies in February 2024
- Should have achieved excellent academic results
How to Apply: To apply for the scholarship, follow these steps:
- Download and complete the Stellenbosch University Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarship Application Form (provided on the website).
- Submit the following supporting documents along with your application form:
- ID document (for South African citizens) or Passport (for international students)
- Full academic transcript
- Honours degree or foreign equivalent (or official proof that the degree will be delivered before December 2023)
- Motivational letter (maximum 600 words)
- Pre-proposal or research idea (maximum 500 words)
- Sample of your writing (Honours research essay for MA applicants and any published academic articles related to your application)
- Send your application and supporting documents via email to graduateschool@sun.ac.za with the subject line “Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarship Application.” Please save the application form in PDF format.
Notes About the Scholarship:
- The application form should be completed in English.
- Applicants should preferably have been in contact with the Department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (recommended but not strictly required).
- Applicants should inform themselves about the availability of suitable supervisors in their research field within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences before applying.
- Scholarships will not be awarded for coursework Masters programs with a thesis component of less than 180 credits.
Closing Date: The closing date for the SU Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarship is October 27, 2023 (extended). Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted, so be sure to apply before the closing date to ensure your application is considered.
