South African Medical Association (SAMA) Bursaries 2025

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) invites South African students to apply for Bursary Programme 2024 academic year.

Bursary Application Closing Date: 15 November 2024.

Bursary Coverage and Conditions

  • Value: Bursaries are valued at R20,000 per annum and are specifically meant to supplement tuition fees.
  • Restrictions: The bursary funds cannot be used for accommodation, books, or other related expenses. The amount will be paid directly to the student’s university account.
  • Duration: The bursary is awarded for 1 year only, but students who achieve good academic results may reapply for consideration the following year.
  • Notification: Successful applicants will be informed by 15 December 2024. If you do not receive any feedback by this date, your application should be considered unsuccessful.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SAMA Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Nationality: Must be a South African citizen.
  2. Education: Must have completed Matric.
  3. Field of Study: Must be enrolled in an MB ChB or MB BCh degree.
  4. Year of Study: Must be entering the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study in 2025 (the bursary does NOT cover 1st-year students).
  5. Institution: Must be studying at a recognized medical school in South Africa.
  6. Academic Performance: Must have a strong academic record.
  7. Financial Need: Must demonstrate financial need.
  8. Preference: Students from historically disadvantaged groups and SAMA members will be given preference.

Required Supporting Documents

Ensure that you submit the following documents along with your completed application form. All documents must be clear and certified copies:

  1. ID Document (certified copy).
  2. Latest Exam Results (certified copy).
  3. Two Recent Written Testimonials (for tips on how to get a letter of reference, click here).
  4. Proof of Household Income:
    • Latest payslips if parents/guardians are employed.
    • Affidavit if unemployed.
    • Proof of SASSA grant or pension, if applicable.
  5. Details of Other Bursary Funding (if applicable).
