About the Role:
As a General Tour Guide at Robben Island Museum, your primary responsibility will be to lead tours that highlight the rich political history, marine history, architectural significance, and natural environment of Robben Island. The museum aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of this historical landmark, and you will play a key role in making the stories of Robben Island come to life for visitors from around the world.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tour Management: Analyze tour rosters, verify transportation and equipment, and ensure a smooth tour experience for all visitors.
- Customer Interaction: Greet tourists at the harbour, assess their needs (such as mobility assistance), and introduce them to the tour structure and island rules.
- Guided Tours: Lead informative tours of Robben Island, covering aspects of marine history, political history, historical buildings, geographical features, and natural environments.
- Research & Knowledge: Continuously expand your knowledge base by researching Robben Island’s history and related political events. Stay informed about both local and global historical contexts.
- Collaboration: Participate in discussions, training, and forums with peers and management, contributing to the development of accurate and engaging tour content.
- Administration: Handle basic administrative duties, including reporting and coordinating logistics for each tour.
Requirements:
- Education: Diploma or Degree in Tourism, History, Social Science, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience as a tour guide.
- Qualifications: Registered Tour Guide with a valid First Aid certificate.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English and at least one other official South African language. Knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.
- Skills & Knowledge: A solid understanding of South African and world political history, as well as environmental and heritage conservation knowledge.
