About the Road Accident Fund
The Road Accident Fund’s mission is to:
- Provide appropriate cover to all road users within South Africa.
- Rehabilitate and compensate individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents.
- Actively promote safe road usage.
Note: This position is an 18-month fixed-term contract.
Purpose of the Role
The Claims Officer is responsible for supporting the Manager in managing RAF litigated matters handled by RAF Attorneys. This role is crucial in ensuring the efficient and cost-effective finalization of claims, ultimately contributing to a reduced legal costs ratio.
Key Responsibilities
- Preliminary Assessment of Litigated Files
- Investigate, evaluate, and settle claims to ensure fair disposal.
- Report complex claims for reinsurance purposes.
- Assess and settle loss of earnings, general damages, medical expenses, and funeral expenses.
- Perform assessment of merits and quantum.
- Appoint assessors for verification and manage court orders.
- Manage Litigious Disputes
- Verify and analyze data for litigated claims.
- Ensure decisions are made following company policies and practices.
- Provide Support for Trial Preparation
- Collaborate with RAF Attorneys on litigation strategy.
- Evaluate outstanding information and expert medico-legal reports.
- Assess claims for possible settlement.
- Report on Trial Outcomes
- Examine claims and investigate questionable claims to authorize settlements.
Qualifications Required
- Four (4) years Degree in Law or equivalent.
- Admission as an Attorney of the High Court or Advocate.
Experience Needed
- 3 years of relevant experience in the claims or litigation environment.

Technical Competencies
- Knowledge of court rules and litigation processes.
- Understanding of RAF litigation infrastructure and strategic objectives.
- Statistical, numerical, and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
