Meat Industry Trust (MIT) Bursaries 2025

Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is welcoming applications from South African students for the Bursary Programme for the academic year 2025

Bursary Application Closing Date: 30 October 2024

The bursary will cover Postgraduate studies (Master’s or Doctorate degree), for research relating to Red Meat Species (Cattle, Sheep or Goats). Bursaries will be awarded for studies relating to 1 or more of the following fields:

  • Consumer / Economics / Marketing
  • Environment / Climate / Carbon footprint
  • Genetics / Genomics / Breeding
  • Health / Disease control / Pharmacology and Toxicology / Bio-security / Welfare
  • Hygiene / Product safety and quality / Food Safety
  • Livestock Nutrition
  • Meat Science / Nutritional value
  • Physiology / Growth / Reproduction
  • Production systems / Efficiency / Management
  • Rangeland / Pasture / Forages / Water
  • Socio-economic aspects of Red Meat Industry
  • Transition agriculture in livestock production
  • Waste management & utilization

The aim of the MIT bursary is to enhance the SA red meat industry scientifically, through research related to the improvement, production, manufacturing, processing, storing or marketing of red meat or red meat products, livestock welfare, and supports the development of human capital.

The bursary will be awarded based on 3 main criteria:
1) Academic record
2) Scientific quality of the project proposal
3) Contribution the project and acquired expertise could make to the South African red meat industry

  • The bursary will be awarded to the value of R60 000 per annum, which will be paid in 2 instalments to the recipients institution.
  • Masters degree students will receive funding to the total value of R120 000, over 2 consecutive years and Doctorate degree students will receive funding to the total value of R180 000, over 3 consecutive years.
  • The bursary is paid in 2 instalments to the recipients institution – the first instalment will be paid after the MIT receives the students proof of acceptance and registration at the tertiary institution, and the second instalment will be paid after the MIT receives a report from the students Supervisor confirming that satisfactory progress has being made.
  • The bursary is renewed each year based on satisfactory academic performance and re-registration at the tertiary institution.

Bursary recipients will be required to submit annual report during the course of their studies, as well as a final report on completion of the studies.

The BWC will select candidates and inform them accordingly.

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must meet the criteria to register for a Master’s or Doctorate degree
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a master’s or doctorate degree, relating to 1 or more of the fields listed above, in 2025
  • Master’s degree applicants: you must have completed 4 academic years for a BSc Hons or a BSc (Agric) registered with the SA Qualifications Authority (SAQUA), or an equivalent qualification, or an equivalent foreign qualification assessed by the SA Council for Natural  Scientific Professions (SACNASP) or the SA Veterinary Council (SAVC), and approved by SAQA
  • Doctorate degree applicants: you must have completed a Master’s degree registered with the SAQA, or an equivalent qualification, or an equivalent foreign qualification assessed by the SACNASP, or the SAVC and approved by SAQUA
  • You must study at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must NOT be employed
  • You must agree to all the terms and conditions on the application form
  • Candidates with other bursaries may apply, however the details of bursaries applied for and awarded must be declared, as well as any conditions that may conflict with this bursary
