The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship programme, administered by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, is named after 2 men – Nelson Mandela and Cecil Rhodes. The scholarship comprises of 2 parts – financial funding for postgraduate studies and a leadership development programme.
The funding component is for postgraduate studies (Honours and Masters degrees) in ANY field of study, at a South African tertiary institution.
Students will receive full funding for a maximum duration of 1 year for Honours students, and a maximum duration of 2 years for Masters students.
The scholarship provides coverage for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, allowance for meals and accommodation, allowance for study materials, allowance for medical aid, personal allowance and an allowance for economy-class travel for international students (from their home to the institution at the start and end of their studies).
The leadership development programme component aims to develop the leadership capacity in Africa, and is made up of 3 components (mentoring, 3 regional group pods and 3 residential workshops).
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- Citizen of ANY African country
- Between 19 and 29 years old (and under 30 years old at the time you start your postgraduate studies)
- In possession of a first degree qualification OR currently completing your undergraduate degree and will complete before taking up postgraduate studies in January 2021
- Achieved a minimum average of 70% in degree studies
- Studying or intend on studying full time towards a postgraduate (Honours or Masters, NOT MBA) qualification
- Studying or intend on studying at a recognised South African tertiary institute
- Good academic record
- Will attend leadership development workshops
- Committed to the following principles – Education, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Reconciliation
- Demonstrated leadership on campus or in your community

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Passport (certified copy)
- Certificate of your degree
- Full tertiary academic record (transcripts of academic results)
- Details of your proposed course of study (it is advisable to apply to more than one university and apply ASAP)
- 2 short essays (1 about your personal journey, and 1 on a specific question relating to the MRF principles)
- 3 letters of recommendation from people who have relevant experience of you and know your character (to be submitted by the recommenders through the application platform)
