Job Purpose
As a Corrosion Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to deliver effective corrosion prevention, control, and protective coating consulting services to the SA Navy and Armscor Dockyard. Your role will ensure the optimal protection and performance of naval assets in demanding marine environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Advisory Services: Offer expert guidance on coating technology and the latest corrosion control engineering developments.
- Cathodic Protection: Design, install, operate, and maintain cathodic protection facilities, ensuring all systems function optimally.
- Preparation and Painting Specifications: Draft specifications for surface treatments and ensure correct implementation.
- Field Trials and Testing: Conduct corrosion field trials and accelerated tests using advanced equipment.
- Consultancy on Coatings: Recommend coating systems based on performance and longevity, covering everything from surface preparation to application methods.
- Technical Advice: Provide insights on corrosion prevention materials and techniques to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ship Maintenance: Work closely with ship system managers to address corrosion-related challenges.
- Cathodic Protection Checks: Perform regular inspections of cathodic protection systems on naval vessels.
- Failure Investigations: Conduct thorough investigations into coating failures and propose future solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education:
- BSc in Chemical Engineering, BSc (Hons) Chemistry, or BSc (Hons) in Materials Science.
- An M. Tech in Science & Engineering or ECSA registration is a plus.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years in the corrosion control and prevention industry.
- Familiarity with corrosion failure analysis, field, and lab testing is highly desirable.
Special Skills and Proficiencies
- Technical Knowledge:
- Expertise in microbiological corrosion issues and metallic coating systems.
- In-depth understanding of marine environment corrosion.
- Knowledge of cathodic protection systems and coating inspections.
