City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is inviting South African students to submit applications for the Bursary Programme for the academic year 2024.

Bursary Application Closing Date: 15 November 2023

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering 200 bursaries for undergraduate studies to students residing in Johannesburg in various fields of study.

Fields of Study Supported: Bursaries are available for undergraduate studies in the following fields:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Build Environment (Architecture, Construction, Inspectors)
  • Commerce
  • Community Services
  • Curatorial Studies
  • Emergency Management Services/Disaster Management
  • Engineering (All Fields)
  • Environmental Management
  • Finance (All Fields)
  • Geo Information Science
  • Health (All Fields)
  • Information Management
  • Information Technology (All Fields)
  • International Relations and Protocol
  • Legal
  • Logistics
  • Marketing
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Municipal Governance
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Real Estate (Property Management, Property Valuation)
  • Town and Regional Planning

Coverage and Renewal:

  • The bursary covers registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, and study materials, up to a maximum amount of R40,000 per year.
  • Bursaries are awarded for one academic year at a time and can be renewed each year, contingent on satisfactory academic performance.

Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the City of Johannesburg Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria:

  1. Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  2. Residency: Must permanently reside in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
  3. Academic Status: Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric.
  4. Field of Study: Must be studying or intend to study full-time for an undergraduate qualification in one of the specified fields (the bursary does not fund postgraduate studies).
  5. Duration: The qualification or course of study should be at least one year long.
  6. Tertiary Institution: Must be studying or planning to study at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa.
  7. Academic Record: Must have a strong academic record.
  8. Other Funding: Must not be receiving any other bursary, grant, or form of funding for study purposes.

Application Process:

  3. Submit clear copies of the required supporting documents along with your online application. Compulsory documents include:
    • ID Document (certified copy)
    • Matric latest results (certified copy) if currently in Matric
    • Matric certificate (certified copy) if completed Matric
    • Most recent academic records (certified copy) if currently studying
    • Proof of residence in Johannesburg (rates account/utility bill)
    • Parents or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips if employed/affidavit if unemployed/death certificate if deceased) (certified copy)
