Allan Gray Orbis Foundation: Bursaries 2023 / 2024

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation invites students to apply for Bursary Programme 2023 / 2024 academic year

Bursary Application closing date  is 28 April 2023.

The fellowship (bursary) will be awarded for undergraduate degree studies within these fields:

  • Arts
  • Commerce
  • Engineering
  • Health Science (excluding Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science)
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Science

The Fellowship Programme aims to help students by cultivating entrepreneurship in Fellows, and ensuring that the Programme results in learners seeking to create entrepreneurship opportunities. Successful candidates will be boarded as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows.

The fellowship award will provide cover for the following expenses, depending on the students household income: university accommodation, meals, textbooks & tutoring allowance and a monthly stipend.

Students from a household with a total annual income of R1 million and BELOW, will receive full funding, and students from a household with a total annual income of MORE than R1 million will receive needs-based funding.

Students also receive support for personal development (mentorship, industry mentor and like-minded community); access to entrepreneurial mindset development (workshops, speakers and seminars, access to business incubation and experiential exercises).

The selection process will include the following steps and dates:
Step 1: applications must be submitted by 28 April 2023 at 17:00.
Step 2: shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited to attend an interview in July 2023.
Step 3: shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a Selection Camp in September 2023.
All applicants will receive feedback after every step of the selection process, to keep them updated on the status of their application.

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must not be older than 21 years old in 2023
  • You must be currently in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics or a minimum result of 80% for Mathematical Literacy in Grade 11 final results
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70% for Grade 11 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • You must intend on studying towards a degree qualification within one of the fields of study listed above, in 2024
  • You must intend on studying at one of the following 11 partner universities: Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, TSiBA, University of Cape Town, University of the Free State, University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Pretoria, University of the Western Cape, University of the Witwatersrand
  • You must believe in the future of South Africa
  • You must have strong entrepreneurial flair and passion
