The Robben Island Museum is hiring Specialised Tour Guiding Officers for a 12-month contract to work within the Public Heritage Department.

Location: Cape Town, Western Cape

The position involves narrating and monitoring the history of Robben Island, particularly focusing on political imprisonment, and assisting with training tour guides.

Job Details:

  • Position: Specialised Tour Guiding Officer (x4)
  • Salary: R267,607.28 – R374,650.19 (Job Grade 10)
  • Contract: 12 months

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct prison tours for VIPs and groups, sharing personal experiences and historical accounts.
  • Present the history of political imprisonment and South African history to specialized groups.
  • Train and induct tour guides to improve their delivery of the political imprisonment narrative.
  • Monitor and evaluate the narrative delivery of tour guides to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Participate in research and assist scholars with topics related to Robben Island’s history.
  • Make presentations on the history of political imprisonment in various settings, including workshops and conferences.
  • Support the museum’s Heritage Education Outreach programs, both locally and internationally.

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • Must have experience as a former inmate of Robben Island Prison.
  • Fluency in English and one other official language.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to engage with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to take initiative and develop new ideas based on assessments.
  • Skills in identifying issues and understanding complex narratives.
