Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA): Bursaries 2022

Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) invites students to apply for Bursary Programme 2022 academic year.

Bursary Application Closing date is 30 September 2021

The MQA would like to invite learners who are presently in Grade 12 or already studying at a public university, university of technology or a TVET college to apply for an MQA bursary for the 2022 academic year.

A total of 1 000 bursary opportunities will be available for the 2022 academic year and for those that commenced with their studies in the second semester of 2021 academic year.

Applicants must be South African citizens.

For Universities and universities of technology:

Onlny the following Fields of study are funded:

  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Jewellery Design Manufacturing
  • Electro Mechanical Engineering
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Mine Surveying
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environmental Health and Management

For TVET colleges:

Onlny the following Fields of study are funded:

  • Boilermaker
  • Fitting (including Machinery)
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel)
  • Instrumentation Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Millwright
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Rigger Ropes man

Note: This bursary is not available for students pursuing post-graduates studies.


The bursary will cover:

  • Tuition and allowances for accommodation,
  • Books
  • Meals.

Preference will be given to the following aspects in the selection of candidates:

  • HDI’s applicants;
  • Financially needy applicants – with a combined income of not more than R600 000 per annum;
  • Female applicants;
  • Applicants living in rural communities;
  • Applicants who have applied to study at their local tertiary institutions;
  • Good academic performance.

Please note that communication will be limited to successful applicants only. If you have not received any communication from MQA by 15 December 2021, then please consider your application as having been unsuccessful. 

Late applications will not be accepted.
